YELection 2008

I am excited to announce an ongoing event for YELers.

With 2008 being an election year, we want to provide our membership with the opportunity to politically educate themselves.

Welcome to YELection 2008.

Super Tuesday is next week, so what better time to kick off YELection 2008.

YELection 2008 is just a way for you to get plugged in to what’s going on in this year-o-politics. This is for informational purposes only. YEL, as a group, is not choosing sides or telling you which way to vote. We want to provide you with information so that YOU can make the best decision for yourself.

YELection 2008’s goal is to inform you the member of what’s going on within the city, the county, the state, and the nation. Since this is a new idea, we are open to any suggestions or feedback you may have.

Are you ready to get plugged in? Stay tuned for information posted tomorrow regarding "Watch Parties" for Super Tuesday 2008.

Step 1 is to get registered to vote

Many people aren't sure if they're even registered to vote and want to know who to call to find out and to get registered if they aren't already. Here's all you have to do

1) Call the County Clerk's office at 782-5065

they can tell you if you're registered or not. If you've moved they can change your info right over the phone

2) If you aren't registered then all you have to do is stop by the Clerk's office and fill out the form. The office is located in the courthouse bldg at the corner of Rogers and 6th st - room # 102.

Once you fill out the form there is a 30-day waiting period before you can vote. So if you really want to help a brother out - register before March 10th (this Monday) so you can vote for me in the special election on April 8th.

Another option is you can download the voter registration form online at http://www.votenaturally.org/all_about_voting.html  After you've done that you can then drop it off at the Clerk's office or mail it in.

Get Registered and Vote!

I know of TWO YEL members thowing their hat in- are there more?

At this point, Travis has made his intentions public. If I lived in his ward, he'd have my vote, unless I was running against him... guess he's lucky, right? HA!!

There is ONE other YEL member I know of who is running to fill another vacancy, currently vacant. He has also volunteered his time/efforts to better his ward, and now wants to bring more to the table of the city directors. He will anounce soon....

YEL members can do a lot to help these candidates. Are there more candidates? Is there, or should there be a place w/in this site to make anouncements of members' intentions to take public office?? I think it'd be a nice addition.

(i have not been asked to write this, by the way...this is nothing more than what it represents)

Running

Yes it's true. I have decided to run for the city director position. And in an effort to help inform and educate young professionals to the election process in accordance with "YELection" I am going to document my entire journey. So get your front row seat to all the action and check out my personal blog.

Also I just want to say all the luck in the world to Andre Good who is running for Ward 2 (I'm running for Ward 1). Andre will make a great director and will bring a lot to the board.

For those of you who happen to live in Ward 1 or 2 (I realize there won't be many yp's in either) vote for both of us.

I'm in the "Running" too!

Thank you Travis for the word of encouragement and your personal endorsement. I was so excited to learn that you were running for the Ward No.1 directorship. What an opportunity we have before us to change the dynamics and the appearance of the board as we volunteer our service. My only wish is there there were more director positions available now for other young professionals to run for!

Like Travis said, i am sure there are not many Y.E.L. members in Ward 1 or 2 to vote for us, but you can use the powers of voicing your opinion and influencing others to support and vote for the candidate(s) of their choice.

Great idea

We are working on having a "YELection" button on the left navigation portion of this site. Just as we have for "Bella Notte" and our "Membership Directory."

We are definitely taking this campaign cycle seriously and are looking forward to seeing YEL members step up to the plate!

City Gov't

There are now 2 vacated City Director positions up for grabs and I've heard there's potential for a 3rd. In addition to the special election which will be held in a couple of months the 4 Ward seats will be up for re-election in November. Talk about opportunity to take things in a new direction. What we need is for some YEL members to throw their hats in the ring and make a run.

If nothing else it will generate some excitement and hopefully capture the attention of the younger generation.

So I pose this question: What do YEL members want to see?  What kind of issues do the young professionals of our community care about? What will get people excited enough to go to the polls?

(You might be inclined to point out that that's 3 questions and not just 1 but before you do let me just say that really it's the same question posed 3 different ways).

Vote for Travis (if you reside in Ward One)

Finding out which ward you live in can be as easy as going to the City of Fort Smiths web site and on the right is listed Interactive GIS . Click that and then click the online maps link and scroll down to Ward Maps. I will try to make it easier for you here: http://gis.fsark.com/maps.html If that doesnt work. Sorry Im not a computer guru.  If you live in Ward 1. Get on the Travis Stephens band wagon and vote in the special election come April 8th!! Make a difference. Travis is!!!

GOP Watch Party

Super Tuesday Watch Party

There is a Republican Watch Party, hosted by local supporters Governor Mike Huckabee, scheduled for 6:30 pm. February 5 at the Howard Johnson in downtown Fort Smith. They welcome all Republican constituents to come and support their candidate. They’re in need of one or two more people to work the registration desk and help with other related duties. Considering how competitive the current bid for the Republican nomination is, this should prove to be a fun and interesting evening. If you’re interested in helping please contact Scott Blair at 479.648.1024 or via email at mchogfan@yahoo.com. They also encourage you to keep up-to-date with this event and all of their efforts at http://mikehuckabee.meetup.com/441/.

GO VOTE

Today is the day...go vote!

YELection

I just walked past early voting at the courthouse and realized I can't vote yet because I have no idea which primary I'd like to participate in this time. I love Arkansas -- the ease at which a voter can cross over from one party to another makes for some very interesting and unpredictable results. We drive pollsters crazy.

So, not only can't I decide on which PRIMARY to cast a ballot, I really am at a loss at which candidate to support. For the first time ever, I find myself making a selection in much the same way as I used to take multiple choice tests -- process of elimination.

Not very encouraging, but it's an important duty and I applaud YEL for helping to inform. We need you guys to jump into this conversation.
